The Barbados Meteorological Service (BMS) is predicting yet another active hurricane season for 2022.

This was revealed during a Press briefing at the Department of Emergency Management in Warrens, St. Michael.

Deputy Director of the Barbados Meteorological Service, Brian Murray, said that, "Based on the figures from the Colorado State University, they are predicting 19 named storms of which nine will become hurricanes and of those nine hurricanes, four of them may become Category 3 or higher."

“Be advised that it is only a forecast of what may happen,” he stressed.

He also gave a review of the last hurricane season, of which Barbados felt the severe effects of Hurricane Elsa back in July of last year.

“Last year was the third most active hurricane season on record, and it marked the sixth consecutive year for above normal activity,” he said.

The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) has again partnered with several media houses to ensure that Barbadians stay informed, ahead of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season.

Director of the DEM, Kerry Hinds, said that such partnerships are crucial in helping the public to remain safe through bad weather.

“As we brace ourselves for what is predicted to be another active hurricane season, this committee thought it prudent and beneficial to harness the resources of the emergency management information and media communities to ensure that the public has the most up-to-date, reliable, and accurate information that is required to make the best informed decisions on how to protect themselves, family, property, and communities,” she explained.

“We recognised that a better informed community results in a safer community," she added.
