Recent elections at the Barbados Community College (BCC) have resulted in the formation of the college’s first all-female guild.

Guild president Charlene Forde is ecstatic to have been a part of this historic event. She stated she wants students to focus on the guild’s objective rather than the abnormality.

Before running for elections, Forde said she would have experienced many hardships when conducting simple tasks at the college. However, the final straw was when she would have taken exams in her first year.

Forde recalled, “I was ill during the examination process, so I had to take my exams during the supplemental period. I did that exam in February and only got my grades back in June. I knew my queries would’ve been lost in the pile of complaints administration already had. I decided to become the voice for not only myself but the student body to ensure these issues would be dealt with promptly.”

To ensure this dream became a reality Forde used her knowledge of social media marketing to engage her potential supporters. Her utilization of skits and visuals posted to her Tik Tok and Instagram accounts demonstrated this.

“I appreciated the school sending out email blasts to alert the students of the elections, but I know those wouldn’t be effective. It wasn’t personable and not engaging. I had the means to do both of those things and reach thousands. I have a pretty large following on both social media platforms,” Forde explained.

Her method worked, and now the BCC Guild is moving forward with projects like the continuing bench renovation, improved school amenities, and expanded student opportunities to ensure they leave a legacy of which the student body can be proud.
