The second phase of the Fairchild Street Market Village is set to get underway next Monday.

Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security – Markets Division and the Urban Development Commission issued a notice earlier today to advise the public about the commencement of the phase, which is expected to last four months.

Manager of Markets, Sherlock King, said he is pleased with the overall progress of the project, as it was just the beginning of the move by the government to develop and remodel a number of public markets.

“We recognise that public markets play a critical role in terms of providing employment for persons who are self employed. They provide facilities for persons who are the farming community and persons who offer services like barbering and shoe repairs,” said King.

The finished market, projected to cost $3.8 million for the first two phases, will feature facilities for 112 vendors, including space for 48 food and beverage stalls, two bathrooms and in Phase 3 will provide an area for seven butchers and one fish monger.

The project, has created many jobs since its inception, utilising 20 small and medium sized contractors, six service providers and  five member project teams, where the total number of persons employed on the FSMV project is estimated to be 125 persons.
