Some part-time staff of the Barbados Community College (BCC) are concerned by the college's decision to reduce their hours.

In a general staff meeting, principal of the Barbados Community College, Ms. Annette Alleyne spoke of the possibility of downsizing part-time hours and part-time staff.

While the semester has had a late start, some tutors who rely on these hours as their primary income, are disgruntled by the sudden decision, taking into consideration the time spent preparing lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, course outlines and other educational aids, as well as contacting and confirming guest speakers, and are awaiting confirmation on how they will be impacted.

According to attorney-at-law Ronshalee Proverbs, it is important for workers to be in contact with their unions and to understand the law and any contractual obligations. Proverbs explained that employers are required to allocate a minimum of three days’ work, unless a worker is to be sent home. She also conveyed that when an employee is working for less than half his or her normal fee, the employer must consult with the affected employees or their representative not less than six weeks prior.
