Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says more focus needs to be placed on cybersecurity as it is critical for the upkeep of a multinational cooperation.

Addressing the Caribbean Nations Security Conference (CANSEC) 2022, Prime Minister Mottley stated the level of security needs to be a focal point to reduce the risks of threats faced by many nations.

She explained, “With concern for the threats, there is no need for her to remind people of them [threats] because these are things that are seen and lived through every day”.

PM Mottley also stated that war and threats are not required, based on the premise of the nation's history.

She said, "That is the first premise of friendship and the premise of being able to secure your own long-term civilization. There are times when we will agree and disagree, but there are equally times when principles are the only thing that matters."

She also stated that, against the backdrop of our history, the government heads should come together to work as one within the Caribbean communities to remove the threats that are so predominantly seen. PM Mottley also explained that, with the growing power of technology, cyber transparency is critical in the upkeep of the non-binding pact of the United Nations.

"With the kind of power that is available to us technologically, transparency and sincerity are critical if we are going to keep society's body together and if we are going to keep the global compact what it ought to be", she explained.

The Prime Minister states that cyber security is now a major part engulfing many nations. “This is not only in the form of ransomware attacks or hacking but regrettably in the formulation of fake news”.

She added that "like everything else technology is a tool which can be used for good or evil and it is up to us to ensure that it is used for good."
