The Residential Waste Collection Improvement Project has started distributing brand new large garbage bins and recycling trays to residents in St. Lucy, St. Peter and St. Andrew. The initiative, which is a collaborative effort between the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) and ProSource Ltd., began on September 29th and is expected to span eight months.

Rheco Moore, a Boscobelle St. Peter resident who received his bin and accompanying recycle container on Friday, said he appreciated the benefits the new garbage bins offered. Moore stated that he had a bin before with good storage capacity and a secure lid to keep out stray animals, but it was unfortunately stolen. He is extremely pleased with this new bin because it has 64 gallons of storage, an attached lid and wheels so he can roll it up his driveway after collection and keep it in his garage.

Moore said he also loves that they have a barcode which is scanned and allocated to the owner in an attempt to help discourage theft. He added that the bin also came with a brochure explaining how the coding and scanning system works in addition to the terms for collection. “The brochure said the SSA workers would only be collecting garbage if it was placed within the new bins. I have garbage in my old bin so I have to wait and see when they collect tomorrow what will happen.”

Moore also added that he is truly appreciative of the efforts the SSA have made to make life that much easier seeing as garbage disposal and collection has been a problem for some time.
