April 27th marked the 67th anniversary of the Democratic Labour Party, and interim President of the DLP Steve Blackett said that the party is on the rebound, and well on its way to continuing to contribute to the social and political fabric of Barbados.

He told The Wallpaper that with the upcoming elections on May 1st between presidential hopefuls Dr David Estwick, and Dr Ronnie Yearwood, the DLP has much to still contribute to the development of the island.

“Sixty-seven years in anybody's life be it a human or an organisation is a significant milestone, we are coming out of a period where we suffered the same fate as we did in 2018 but as interim president I can say that we are on the rebound,” he said.

Blackett added that with the party still recovering from double blows at the polls in? 2018 and in 2022, he is looking forward to the future of the DLP.

“We are on the cusp of having our extraordinary conference on Sunday May 1st and in that conference we will be electing a new president and I believe that will be the turn of events that will see the rebound of the DLP in a very positive way,” he added.

“We have achieved quite a bit in Barbados, we have been in office for three separate terms and we have contributed significantly to Barbados’ social development and I dare say that we have a lot more to contribute to the overall development of Barbados,” he said.

In a circular online the DLP stated that with the party preparing itself to welcome a new President the party is reflective of those who “laid the foundation of nationhood and the walls and rooms of the Republic.”

“We assure members and supporters that we are prepared to redouble our dedication to the masses of the country, and to work with all people of good intent,” the statement said.

The DLP added in the circular that the party has taken the advice from the results of the 2018 and 2022 polls and acknowledges that “the voice of the people is asking for us to reflect again on the contract made by the founders.”
