The celebration of public workers and their achievements is the primary focus of this year’s Public Workers’ Week, which began on Sunday, March 20th, and will continue over the next five days.

General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Richard Greene, said it is important to highlight the achievements of civil servants.

Greene indicated that it is time for a “serious look and reflection” at the contributions of civil servants through the social services offered to the public, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He added: “There is no good Government policy that can be executed without the good work of public workers and now is the time to acknowledge that.”

As part of the week of activities, the Union held a panel discussion on “The Economy and Labour” on Monday night.

Members of the panel included Member of Parliament for St. Michael South Central, Marsha Caddle, and former economist, Jeremy Stephen.

There will be another panel discussion tonight that will focus on the socio-economic climate changes and the panelists include the Head of the Men’s Empowerment Network, Fabian Sargeant, Mechell Marshall, and Derek Alleyne.

Other activities on the cards for this week’s celebrations include the union’s official opening of the Union's General Conference on Thursday, which will include a feature address by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

The theme of this year’s labour week is Labour Challenges Confronting the Economic, Social and, Climate Changes in this Era and Beyond.
