The Student Guild of the Barbados Community College (BCC) recently partnered with the local organisation, U-Report Barbados, a social messaging tool and data collection system developed by UNICEF.

It provides Barbadian youth with a platform to become “U-Reporters” and share their thoughts on the pressing issues and monumental events affecting them and their livelihoods. The information is collected via their online polls and then subsequently shared on the organisation’s social media pages. This is done with the hopes of furthering the conversation and aiding in the development of today’s youth.

Student Guild President, Charlene Forde was advised by her predecessor to join forces with U-Report Barbados as he observed the many opportunities the students at the college could gain.

“Within the U-Report programme students will be allowed to apply and become “U-ambassadors”; we are also looking for students for campus recruitment drives,” Forde said.

She added that these opportunities will lead to these people being trained by coordinators from U-Report Barbados which can lead to job opportunities and internships which were all things the student body have been requesting for years.

In the upcoming weeks, the BCC Guild will release a series of posts on its Instagram page as well as email blasts to the students informing them of how they can sign up and become a part of the U-Report Barbados team.

“The partnership will last until a new guild is elected however, we will encourage the newly elected guild to continue the partnership as it proves to have long-term benefits for the college and the community,” Forde explained.
