The management of the Barbados Community College (BCC) is committed ensuring student safety through the adherence of COVID-19 protocols.

Deputy Principal of the BCC, Dr. Cheryl Weekes, explained that while protocols have not currently changed, there is intent over the next few days to discuss whether there will be any changes or updates to the current procedures outside of the government mandated three-foot distance between persons.

Dr. Weekes stated that the intent of the BCC was to maintain the current protocols which included the wearing of masks and the use of sanitisation.

“We recognise that the pandemic is still with us. Yes, we have a lull in terms of the number of cases every day, but we recognise that we still have to maintain the protocols,” she clarified.

Another safety measure to be put in place is the addition of more hand sanitising stations across the campus. Dr. Weekes also expressed that the reinforcement of current protocols was still in effect.

“When you come to the gate for example, we’re still going to be checking temperatures before entry, and we still require persons to wear their masks to enter the compound,” she said.

While there has been concern about the ability to maintain physical distancing in large class settings, Dr. Weekes was confident that the measures in place, such as maintaining online teaching for large class sizes, and maintaining assigned seating would be effective.

Dr. Weekes also stated the college’s intent to maintain complete communication of current protocols as well as any future changes to all students via email and updates from the Guild of Students and associated social media pages.
